Windows 11
A faint high-pitched whine comes from the Dell XPS 16 9640 under load, separate from the fans. The Intel Core Ultra 7 155H laptop can produce coil whine when the GPU renders very high frame rates. It is harmless, and capping the frame rate is the best way to quiet it.

Fix 1 — Cap the Frame Rate
In the NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings, set a Max Frame Rate (for example 60 or 120). Limiting how many frames the GPU renders stops the coils being driven hard, which is the main source of whine on the XPS 16 9640.
Fix 2 — Enable VSync in Apps and Games
- Turn on VSync in each game or app graphics setting
- This caps frames at the display refresh rate
- Menus and loading screens no longer race to thousands of FPS
- The whine usually drops away

Fix 3 — Use Balanced Power Mode
Settings → System → Power and battery → Power mode → Balanced. A lower power ceiling reduces the peak current through the coils, which can soften the whine on the XPS 16 9640 during light tasks.
Fix 4 — Update Graphics Drivers and BIOS
Run Dell Command Update and install the latest NVIDIA, Intel Arc and BIOS updates for the XPS 16 9640. Power-tuning improvements in these updates sometimes reduce the conditions that cause audible coil whine.
“Setting a 120 FPS cap in the NVIDIA panel almost completely silenced the coil whine on my XPS 16 9640 in game menus.” — Daniel, Subang Jaya
