SD Card Reader Not Detected — Step-by-Step Fix
The SD card reader in the Dell Latitude 5550 is controlled by a Realtek card reader chip. If the SD card does not appear in File Explorer when inserted, the cause is usually one of two things: the Realtek driver is missing, or the reader has been disabled inside the BIOS. Both are easy to resolve without any hardware changes.
Fix 1 — Enable SD Card Reader in BIOS
Restart the laptop and press F2 immediately after the Dell logo appears to enter BIOS Setup. Navigate to System Configuration, then Miscellaneous Devices. Look for an option labelled SD Card Read or Secure Digital (SD) Card and make sure it is set to Enabled. Press F10 to save and exit. The Latitude 5550 sometimes ships with this disabled in certain enterprise configurations, so this check is always worth doing first.
Fix 2 — Install the Realtek Card Reader Driver
Go to dell.com/support and enter your Service Tag or search for Latitude 5550. Under Drivers and Downloads, filter by Chipset. Find the Realtek Memory Card Reader driver and download the latest version for Windows 11. The installer is around 8 MB. Run it as administrator and restart. After reboot, insert an SD card and check if it appears in File Explorer under This PC.
Fix 3 — Scan for Hardware Changes in Device Manager
If the driver is installed but the reader still does not appear, open Device Manager and click Action in the menu bar, then Scan for hardware changes. This forces Windows to re-enumerate connected devices and reload any installed drivers that were not activated. You should see a Realtek PCIE CardReader entry appear under the Memories technology category. Right-click it and choose Update driver if a yellow exclamation mark is visible.
Fix 4 — Format the SD Card with a Compatible File System
SD cards formatted with exFAT or FAT32 work on all Windows 11 systems. If the card was formatted with ext4 or another Linux file system, Windows will not be able to read it regardless of the driver status. Use another computer to format the card to FAT32 or exFAT, then re-insert it into the Latitude 5550 to test.
